The temperature was 95 degrees here in Portland yesterday. Thank goodness the Convention Centre has a good air conditioning system! I taught my "Hang Ups" pattern to 25 wonderful students yesterday morning and will be doing the same class again today.
I still haven't had time to see the rest of the show, but hopefully I will be able to get out of my booth for a few minutes today. There are so many great displays here!

Portland Quilt Market: Just a Week Away!
I spent yesterday cutting 50 fabric kits for the classes I will be teaching at the International Quilt Market in Portland, Oregon next week. The classes will be making a sample of my "Hang Ups" pattern #327. The fabric is from Northcott Fabrics and is called "Emma Louise & Ethan Michael". It was designed by Sheri Berry and is part of the Lyndhurst Collection. This fabric comes in both cotton and flannel and is perfect for a project for a special child or grandchild. The fabric just arrived in the Northcott warehouse last week and will be available in quilt shops very soon.
Here are some pictures of the fabric, the kits waiting to be packaged and the project for the classes. This little hanging can be hung on the wall or placed on a decorative easel. You can see more samples of the pattern on my website at this link.

The Great Canadian Shop Hop: Ready to View!
Tricia Sherman's Great Canadian Shop Hop programme that was filmed at the Country Quilter in Richmond, Ontario is now on her website. You can see my demo on Memory Quilts, as well as all the events connected with the Quilt Marathon, held annually at the shop.

The Great Canadian Shop Hop for QNN
Filming for the Great Canadian Shop Hop programme for QNN (Quilters’ News Network) was done yesterday at the Country Quilter quilt shop in Richmond, Ontario. Shop owner, Ann McLean, was at the shop very early in the day, baking muffins and coffee cake, and welcoming the many quilters who were part of this event. The show, produced by Tricia Sherman from Vancouver, focused on The Quilt: A Breast Cancer Support Project. Co-ordinator of this event, Carol Miller, was there and it was a great pleasure to meet her.

I was thrilled to be the guest pattern designer on the show. I did a demo using some of my newest patterns, including my Hang Ups, Pop-Out Picture Quilts and Pop-Out Picture Books. I also talked about how easy it is to print pictures on fabric and incorporate vintage linens and lace in memory quilts.
Barry, the camera man, was amazing! He was interested in the whole quilting process, even to the point of wanting to film underneath the frame as the quilters were working, so he could show what was actually happening on the underside of the quilt. 
Shop owner, Ann McLean was a wonderful hostess throughout the day. She remained calm and collected, while multi-tasking constantly. And of course, the shop was open, so Ann and her staff were dealing with the regular customers while all the filming was happening throughout the store. More information about this wonderful shop will be included in a future post.

More About "Hang Ups"
My little Hang Ups designs can be finished in many different ways. The metal hangers shown in the pictures in yesterday's post were originally designed to hold small stained glass pieces, but I found them to be ideal for holding these small quilts. I used a stiff, fusible interfacing instead of batting. This makes a quick-to-finish project that does not even require quilting. There are little hooks on the metal hangers and I used a small hook on each corner of the quilt to attach it to the hanger.
You can also finish these projects in the traditional way, using batting and a hanging sleeve. Then you can hang them on the wall just as you would any other small hanging.
These make great gifts for someone special. You might even be able to get one finished in time for Valentine's Day!

Hang Ups
I have a large collection of old photographs which I enjoy using in my quilts. I have collected these pictures over the years at flea markets and antique shows. Friends have given me pictures of long forgotten relatives as well. I refer to this collection as my "instant ancestors" because I have no idea who any of these people are either!
When I published the "Hang Ups" series of patterns last fall, I used many of these photographs by printing them on fabric (EQ Printables is my favourite product to use) and then incorporating them into the design. I decided that there should be information about the picture on the back of each little quilt, and so I had a wonderful time making up stories of my instant ancestors. The story labels were printed on fabric, just as the pictures were.
For the "More Hang Ups" pattern, I made a little pocket on the back of the quilt, printed the story on fabric, and then made a separate little "postcard" to slip in the pocket.

"Reading" While Sewing
I often listen to books on CD while I am sewing. For the past couple of days I have been sewing bindings on samples made from my "Hang-Ups" series of patterns. This is pretty mindless work, so it is always nice to have a good book to listen to while working. This week I have been listening to "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini who is also the author of "The Kite Runner". It is a fascinating story of life in Afghanistan during the last thirty years. Although the book is a work of fiction, it is based on fact. If you enjoyed either the book or movie, "The Kite Runner", I would certainly recommend this latest book by Hosseini.
I am also enjoying working with the new spring fabrics. We have had so much snow and ice here this winter, it is a pleasure to see something bright and cheerful. I especially like using the popular striped fabrics for the bindings. The fabrics used in these samples are from the new Strawberry Lemonade and Swell fabric collections by Moda.
